Chargers get 24-hour extension to lift blackout

“SAN DIEGO (AP)—Despite Super Bowl expectations for Southern California’s only NFL team, San Diego hasn’t exactly been overtaken by Chargers fever.

The Chargers were granted a 24-hour extension by the NFL on Thursday in an attempt to sell 600 remaining tickets and lift the local television blackout of their season opener Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

The Chargers, who fell one victory short of reaching the Super Bowl last season, have until 1:15 p.m. Friday to sell the remaining tickets.

“Our streak of 30 consecutive regular-season and postseason sellouts is definitely in jeopardy,” Jim Steeg, the team’s chief operating officer, said in a statement.

The Chargers can leave San Diego after the 2008 season if they pay off about $60 million in bonds the city issued in 1997 to expand Qualcomm Stadium. The team is conducting an analysis of how much it would cost to build a stadium in suburban Chula Vista.”

This Day In Chargers History

Aug. 14, 1959 – Today in 1959, a meeting was held in Chicago with representatives from six teams. Barron Hilton represented the Los Angeles entry for the proposed football league. In about mid October the Los Angeles team would pick their name “Chargers” from a “name-the-team contest” won by Gerald Courtney of Hollywood, CA.

It wasn’t until Feb 10th, 1961 that the Chargers would be able to call San Diego their home.

That my friends, has been today’s Frightening Lightning history lesson.
